WDCTS-TCML (Washington D.C. Taiwanese School -Taiwan Center for Mandarin Learning) Conversation Class Note - Oct 1, 2023

1 . I am impressed about everyone’s active participation in reviewing “self-Introduction” by speaking correctly in tones at least two sentences about yourself.  I am proud of your speaking confidently without any fear.  Kudos to you all.  You all deserved the “Moon Cakes” from Teacher Wu.

1)         1) Steven (葛艾倫): I am Steven.  I am a bit tired now because I woke up early to take my daughter, Jen-Jen, to play soccer.  It’s not American Football.  My wife is Taiwanese who came to America when she was two years old.  Her father, my father-in-law, was from Taichung.  Her grandfather was from Changhua.

2)         2) Anna (洋安娜): I am Anna, I am Armenian.  This is my second-year learning Mandarin.  I was out last week because I took my son, 18 years old, to visit Boston.  He would like to go to Harvard and MIT.  But we encourage him to follow his own character traits and interests.  We would not like to draw a line for him to follow.  We went to Boston Fine Arts Museum that has so many Chinese poems.  I still remember the famous poem of his I learned from last year, 《靜夜思》Quiet night thought.  It’s poetic and nostalgic. Steven (葛艾倫): shared a picture of Li-Bai "Admiring the water-fall" from the museum.

3)         3) Ricco (熊大東):  My name is Darrel Ricco.  I Chinese name is Bear East.  I love playing tennis.  I also like poems.  My favorite one is 登鸛雀樓 – Climbing the White Stork Tower》. I study Mandarin at “acclaimed Harvard in Taiwan – National Taiwan University.”

4)         4) Amy (李愛美):  My name is Amy.  I am American, but my parents are from Vietnam.  I have received my master’s degree from National Taiwan University.  I like the school very much.

5)         5) Sasha (蔡下雪):  My name is Sasha.  I am from Ukraine.  If my wife went abroad to study at Harvard, then I wouldn’t be able to meet and get married to her.  I did have an opportunity to make a presentation at a symposium in National Taiwan University.

2. We demonstrated enthusiastically the role playing in group discussion to share the learning and cultural experience.  We reviewed the homework from last week “Color identification from each continent.”

1) Sasha (蔡下雪):  The Ukraine’s country flag is blue and yellow.

2) Janice (the teacher吳老師):  I will take two weeks break on December 17, 2023 and January 7, 2024 to take my two grandchildren, 10 and 7 years old,  to find grandparent’s roots in Taiwan. – visiting the elementary schools and libraries.

3) Anna (洋安娜):  I learned with you – it’s different from the roots – it’s homophone – They sound the same but are different in meaning or words.  Learning mandarin is so interesting!

4) Steven (葛艾倫): playing as “Teaching assistant” to help correct Ann’s sentence word order and meaning of the second-year learning Mandarin.  – it’s ordinal numbers as prefixes and adjectives.
