1.     1. The new semester of the 2023 fall class started this week. The Intermediate Chinese Adult Class (Level 2) has 5 new students, in addition to the old students, Darrell Rico Doss (熊大東),and Steven gross (葛艾倫), the new students are:

2. We are honored to be able to entrust the Chinese Language Learning Center of Tamkang University in Taiwan with the Taiwan Overseas Community Affairs Commission of R.O.C. (Taiwan)(OCAC) to send researchers, Teacher Chen Yuming(陳玉明-inclined multi-slashes teaching) and MIT Chinese Program Director, Teacher Liao Haoxiang(廖灝翔), MIT Digital Chinese Language Teacher for his  design and in (MOOCs).  Their main purposes are to visit Taiwan Center for Mandarin Learning  across the United States and provide policy suggestions for the Overseas Community Affairs Council of R.O.C. (Taiwan) (OCAC).  Professor Liao observed the live teaching and interviewed a few students. The students welcomed him warmly and introduced themselves in Chinese. The teachers are also proud of the students.  Profess Chen was not able to make it due to a flight delay in Chicago.

3.  3. We have increased enrollment in adult classes. Teachers will divide students into classes according to their level, and help students adapt to the class environment in a short period of time. If they are not adaptable, they can request to change classes.
成人班註冊人數增加。各位老師按照學生程度分班,譲學生短期先適應班級進度環境,如果不適應可請求調換班級。

Chéngrén bān zhùcè rénshù zēngjiā. Gèwèi lǎoshī ànzhào xuéshēng chéngdù fēn bān, ràng xuéshēng duǎnqí xiān shìyìng bānjí jìndù huánjìng, rúguǒ bù shìyìng kě qǐngqiú diàohuàn bānjí.

4.       4. Teacher Wu uses "12 basic Chinese words", "life survival phrases" and "simple self-introduction" method to make everyone learn easily and happily.  We understand the origin of students' names and the related history of naming by parents or teachers.

吳老師以「華語基本12句語詞」及「生活短語」「簡單自我介紹」讓大家輕鬆愉快的學習,了解同學的名字來源,父母或老師命名的相關歴史。

Wú lǎoshī yǐ `huáyǔ jīběn 12 jù yǔcí'jí `shēnghuó duǎn yǔ'`jiǎndān zìwǒ jièshào'ràng dàjiā qīngsōng yúkuài de xuéxí, liǎojiě tóngxué de míngzì láiyuán, fùmǔ huò lǎoshī mìngmíng de xiāngguān lìshǐ. 

5. When Amy Le said, When I was studying my master's program at National Taiwan University, the teacher named me "Li Ming Lan(黎明蘭)" after my middle name. I didn't quite like it very much. We used "Editor Liu Yong-Hanzi Alive" to understand that (Li) means Sunrise, which means sunrise and dawn. She agreed that we should do it by voting. The students had lively discussions, brainstorming, and creative research. Finally, she was delighted with the successful naming of "Lee Amy".
Amy Le 說「我在臺灣大學唸碩士班時,老師取名,按照我的中間名,取名(黎明蘭)時,不是非常喜歡。」我們用「劉墉編輯-漢字有意思」經過了解,黎明是Sunrise ,日出拂曉意思。她同意我們用投票方式來進行。同學熱烈討論,腦力激盪,創意研究。最後以「李愛美」成功取得她的欣喜。

  This word,  is “beautiful.”  Its pictograph depicts a person wearing an ornate headdress, which is considered very beautiful. 

2.    Some others interpret the origin of “” differently: 

They say that the character is made up of ““ (sheep) and ““ (big), thus meaning “a large sheep is very beautiful.”

Dāng Amy Le shuō `wǒ zài táiwān dàxué niàn shuòshì bān shí, lǎoshī qǔ míng, ànzhào wǒ de zhōngjiān míng, qǔ míng (límíng lán) shí, wǒ bùshì fēicháng xǐhuān.'Wǒmen yòng `liúyōng biānjí-hànzì yǒuyìsi'jīngguò liǎojiě, límíng shì Sunrise, rì chū fúxiǎo yìsi. Tā tóngyì wǒmen yòng tóupiào fāngshì lái jìnxíng. Tóngxué rèliè tǎolùn, nǎolì jīdàng, chuàngyì yánjiū. Zuìhòu yǐ `lǐ àiměi'chénggōng qǔdé tā de xīnxǐ.
6. We will review "Let’s Learn Mandarin Volume 1" again and move on to Volume 2 accordingly.
