October 2, 2022 - Washington D.C. Taiwanese School Advanced Mandarin Conversation Class Note

  • We combined Ms. Tung's 4 classmates together to play the games of "recognizing the words and meanings through radicals".  We had three winners getting 3 accurate spellings out of 7 radical combinations.  A few students even inferred the meaning of the word from the context of the assigned radicals.  They all had fun from this game.
  • Wǒmen jiāng dǒng lǎoshī de 4 gè tóngxué zǔhé zài yīqǐ, wánle “bù shǒu rèn zì” yóuxì. Wǒmen yǒu 3 míng huòshèng zhě - cóng 7 gè bù shǒu zǔhé zhōng huòdéle 3 gè zhǔnquè de pīnxiě. Yīxiē xuéshēng shènzhì cóng zhǐdìng de bù shǒu de shàngxiàwén zhōng, tuīduàn chū zhège cí de hányì. Xuéshēng rèn zì xuéxí, jǔyīfǎnsān, fēicháng gāocháo.

  • They deserved the kudos for coming up with he following examples:  1. From pull to push. 2. Taiwan Expressway has Taiwan 1, Taiwan 2, and Taiwan 3 lines.  Jiǎyǐ bǐngdīng. Motorcycles are not allowed on Taiwan highways. 3. From finger radical - "pointing" to "cellulite".

  • There is difference between "moon" and "meat" radicals - "meat" - hanging in butcher's stall, the carcass of an animal, - flesh - it is written sideways as "moon". "Moon" - the crescent moon.  It looks like "meat" when the later is written in compound characters.
  • “Yuè” hé “ròu” bù shǒu zhī jiān yǒu qūbié——“ròu”——guà zài túfū de tānwèi shàng, dòngwù de shītǐ——ròu——tā bèi xiěchéng “yuè”. “Yuè”——xīn yuè. Dāng hòuzhě yòng fùhé zìfú xiě shí, tā kàn qǐlái xiàng “ròu”.T looks like"meat" when the later is written in compound characters.
  • We had two students Ellie and Daniel from George Mason  University and University of Maryland to participate knowledge and cultural sharing sponsored by "Taiwan Youth and Overseas Expatriate Bridging Program from The Overseas Community Affairs Council."  They are all elite students from Taiwan.  The free-format knowledge and cultural exchange and sharing establishes a bridge between Taiwanese youth and the overseas expatriate community. They all appreciated Washington Taiwan School (WDCTS) hosted this event in our class (Taiwan Center for Mandarin Learning TCML).  Bundle of Thanks and wish to do it again.

  • We also discussed "Taiwan Expo" event which will be held at DC on Oct 12 - Oct 14.  Students would like to participate and become a part of Taiwan promotion.

  • We used Kevin's letter to us as our "Listening Comprehension" training for Band A Test of Chinese as a Foreign language (TOCFL) next year.   He addressed his apology that he would miss today's "knowledge & cultural event" with us and his current school-work load at George Washington University Columbian College of Arts & Sciences Chinese language & Literature program
